Financial Position Check

Early stage.

A score in this band: 0 to 9 out of 20. At least one critical dimension is exposed. The right move is to identify which one and fix it before anything else. The five dimensions below tell you where to look.

What the five dimensions mean at this stage.

Buffer

A buffer score in this band usually means less than one month of essential costs is covered. One unexpected bill - a medical emergency, a job gap, a broken appliance - removes every option. The first move is not investing. It is building a separate account that holds three months of rent, food, transport, and utilities, untouched.

Debt Load

If more than 40 percent of take-home pay goes to repayments, debt is consuming the capacity to build anything else. The priority is reducing that ratio before adding new financial commitments. That means either increasing income, reducing the debt balance, or both - and it means not adding new debt while doing it.

Savings Rate

A savings rate below 5 percent means almost nothing is staying. The target is not perfection - it is consistency. Even 5 naira in every 100 kept in a separate account, every month, builds the habit and the balance that the next two dimensions require.

Investment Readiness

Investing before a buffer is built is a risk, not a strength. If the buffer dimension is weak, investment readiness is correctly low - not because investing is wrong, but because the sequence matters. Buffer first. Then investing.

Platform Safety

If money is already in an investment platform, the single most important check is whether that platform is registered with the SEC Nigeria. The register is public and free: sec.gov.ng. An unregistered platform has no regulatory protection, no matter how polished the app looks.

The one move to make first.

Find the weakest dimension and address only that. The Financial Position Check tells you which one it is. If the buffer is the problem, open a separate savings account this week - a money market fund works well - and set up a standing order for whatever you can commit to. If debt is the problem, list every obligation, find the highest-rate one, and direct any surplus there first.

The check is free and takes about three minutes. It scores all five dimensions and tells you exactly where to start.
